Countdown on 95 Remarkable Photographer’s Portfolios
Dec 14th, 2007 by Juha Ylitalo
We started with 99 Photograher’s Portfolios and we still have 95 to go. As added bonus material, I will also add my three favorites among those that we’ve so far reviewed.
My first impression from Kristopher Grunert’s portfolio was very negative, because front page boldly reads:
Once we get past this first reaction, the photographs themselves are pleasant surprise. There is something eerie in photographs atmosphere. Some of them are long exposures from highways. Some photographs so streams of car lights, but many of them have do not have any signs of life in photographs. Only human being that one can see in his portfolio pictures is a person wearing protective gear and a device that looks like some sort of radiation meter. All in all, I have bit mixed feelings from his site, but his photographs show personal style.
John Paul has interesting idea on his website design, because all his images are placed on horizontal list. This images are too small for really determining whether or not one would be interested to buy photograph to home (images height on webpage is limited to 300px). To cope with this, John has published some PDF files, which images can be viewed at higher resolution.
Most of the images look like smoke in air, sand dunes, waves and other things like that. Some of them might be real landscapes, while others have rocks hanging in the air, mirroring image vertically or horizontally, etc. All in all, these images left me bit cold. Still, I would dare to say that these images would not have their place in market.
93. Denis Olivier
After last two entries, Denis Olivier’s website usability is pleasant suprise. There aren’t any tricks on getting photographs shown up on screen. All his photographs seem to be black and white and most of them look as something that has been shot with long exposure. Somehow the combination of black and white with long shutter speeds makes photographs look sad.
92. Cerdic Delsaux
Cerdic has lot of nice and at the sametime strange photograph in his portfolio. Unfortunately you can only view them in flash application, which usability is questionable. As an concrete example, I couldn’t figure out, how I am supposed to be able to navigate between images without going back to thumbnail page.
91. Denis Darzacq
Based on the text in his portfolio, this portfolio might speak to people. However it didn’t do that to me and as a result, we have 16 color photographs from urban setting and each photograph has some person floating in air.
After going through 99 Remarkable Photographer’s Portfolio list from 91st to 99th, my personal top three is following:
1st John Hyde (from position 97 in list)
2nd Gregory Colbert (from position 99 in list)
3rd Sam Bassett (from position 96 in list)

[...] the beginning there was 99 of them. We started secound round from 95th and counted down to 91st. After first nine photographers, I spent quite bit time on other ventures, [...]
