Hike to Halti and back – 1st day

Hike to Halti and back - 1st day

Our hiking trip started on August 8, as we stepped on night train to Kolari. In a following morning, we went to resteraunt cabin in train for breakfast. Around eight a clock, the queue wasn’t too bad and we decided to eat breakfast packet (8.00-8.50 euros per person), which had orange juice, rye bread, tea/coffee and porridge. When we were finishing our breakfest, the queue was whole lot longer.
Once our train arrived to Kolari, train terminal had three buses waiting for passangers to various destinations. We picked up a bus that took us to Kilpisjärvi (tickets were about 45 euros per person). When we got to Kilpisjärvi, it was good time to get some lunch. After lunch, we called taxi and headed out north across the border to Didnojohka (also known as Didnu). This has grown out to be very popular starting place for hikers. According to taxi driver, we were 3rd group on Saturday, who wanted a ride from Kilpisjärvi to Didnu.

After we had done all that traveling on a train, bus and taxi, it was finally time to start hiking (around 4pm). First waypoint on our route would be Lossujärvi on a second day of a hike. First half kilometer of our trail was actually a road to Didnojohka’s hydroplant. After that it was time to start following a trail that went along the Didnojohka river.
Our timetable for first day was very flexable, because we had planned to setup camp somewhere between starting place and Lossujärvi. With this in mind, I stopped once or twice to setup tripod, when I wanted to take photographs about small waterfalls. Route offered nice views to various kinds of rivers and rock formations that we would have to conquer in coming week. On a first day, all the river crossings happened by jumping on rocks.
Since the terrain was relatively easy for walking, we ended up walking all the way to Loassuhytta, which is Norwegean wilderness cabin that is located right next to the national border between Finland and Norway. By the time, we managed to setup the tent, it started to drizzle. After dinner, it became obvious that this night we wouldn’t take any photographs about sky. Thankfully we knew that our tent was more than capable to keep us dry.
