Hautajärvi – starting point for Karhunkierros
Jan 6th, 2009 by Juha Ylitalo
Karhunkierros (direct translation would be Bear’s ring) is often refered as most popular hiking route in Finland. Peoples attraction to Karhunkierros comes from various sights along the trail and the fact that its close to highways, which gives you more freedom on where you want to start and finish. Among all entry and exit points to Karhunkierros Hautajärvi is only one, which is officially in Lapland. It can easily be reach by car, taxi and/or bus (*).
From here it is 80km hike to Ruka assuming you don’t make sidetrips to Oulangan kanjoni, Ristikallio or someother sights. In following articles, we will introduce you to some of them.
(*) On a summertime, whenever Finnair’s flight lands in Kuusamo airport, bus starts from airport to Ruka and from Ruka to Salla. Along the way, it can make stops at least in Juuma, Ristikallio and Hautajärvi, if passangers request it.
