L - Log
Apr 9th, 2008 by Juha Ylitalo
This week’s theme in ABC Wednesday is letter L. Unlike in earlier weeks, I had done my homeworks and had made list of words starting with L into my notebook (small Moleskine ruled reporter book). My list of L words had Lapland, levada, Levi and log in it. From these choises, I decided that log is the word for this Wednesday.
This is end of the log from a very old, but nice, cabin in Kuusamo. Based on Finns preferences on wood, it has originally been Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris). If you want, you can try tree-ring dating, but even on quick glance we can all probably agree that it has been pretty old tree, when it has been cut down. That is because the tree has grown in Kuusamo (just south from Lapland) and in that area forest’s rotation rate is around 100 years.

I liked that picicture of the log - simple and effective. It seems to have dried up a bit, though.

Nice ring pattern on the log. Sounds like you have been doing your homework so you should have enough L’s for the next several ABC Wednesday go-arounds.

You can also see by the log that there had been some good years and some that were not so good. We have some huge slices of log at the National Park to show the rings with some years in history marked in estimate. Theya re very old tress fromt he old growth forest.
