Kilimanjaro

This week’s letter in ABC Wednesday is K. I decided that K is for Kilimanjaro, highest mountain in Africa.
While nothing is going to challenge its place as highest mountain in Africa, it remains to be seen how long its going to have glaciers and snow on its peaks. According to Wikipedia current estimations vary between 2015 and 2020, which is not that far in a future. Due to changing conditions, they’ve already closed at least one popular hiking route (Western Breach in January 2008) from public. Once the glaciers and snow have disappeared, it will undeniably have some sort of impact to the whole ecosystem in a mountain, because glaciers have provided water for the nature beneath them. Even from tourism’s point of view, it will become less interesting place to visit. So if you are thinking that it would be nice to one day climb to Kilimanjaro, now would be good time to do something about it.

Location: 3100m above sea level in Mweka route (we went up in Machame route and used this one for descent)
Technical details about photograph: Canon PowerShot G3 (11.2mm, 1/100s, f/5.6, ISO50)
