Oulankajoki

This week’s letter in Mrs. Nesbitt’s ABC Wednesday. My choice for O is Oulankajoki that flows in Kuusamo from Finland to Russia. If you hike along Karhunkierros (direct translation would be Bear’s Ring) hiking trail from Hautajärvi to Ruka, you will first come across with this river in Savilampi.
With 1km trip away from a trail, you will get spectacular view to canyon, which is called Oulangan kanjoni (week 23/07). Oulankajoki flows at the bottom of this canyon. From there on hiking trail and river go hand in hand and hiker will see rapids in Taivalköngäs and Kiutaköngäs and couple other lovely nature scenes. After 20-30kms hiking trail turns away from Oulankajoki and takes new heading towards Kitkajoki.
