Bird photography with 100mm macro lens

Photography has a large set of “rules” and one of those is that you need 400+mm lens and fast auto focus for taking photographs about birds. However, this photograph was taken with 100mm macro lens from Suomenlinna ferry. The focal length of this lens is too short for normal bird photography and auto focus of macro lenses is considered to be slow in comparison to other lenses, but it didn’t stop me from taking this photograph.
When the ferry leaves from Helsinki downtown to Suomenlinna, swarm of gulls will appear and start following it. I don’t know if ferry’s screws will push fishes in water closer to the surface or what is the magical trick that makes gulls and terns hover around ferry’s stern, but they keep on doing it for most of the journey to Suomenlinna.
The bird in the photograph is Common Gull (Larus canus) and buildings in the background are part of Helsinki downtown.
