Hike to Halti - 3rd day

Halti - Highest point in Helsinki

In 3rd round of Mrs. Nesbitt’s ABC Wednesday, we are currently on letter H. I felt that it would be fun to use this opportunity for posting report about 3rd day of our hiking trip to Halti, which is highest point in Finland.

Our third day started in Marfejohka. In a previous day, when we had descent from Govddogaisi, we saw lovely waterfall and bunch of snow next to it. At that time, I didn’t have opportunity to take photograph about it, because it was raining and we were bit tired so we were in rush to find a place for a camp. In a morning, I decided that it is never too late and went to take couple photographs about it before breakfast.
Once everything was packed, we started to walk west towards Pihtsusjärvi. Water level on rivers along the route was so low that we were able to go across them by jumping on rocks. Direct route would have taken us over fell called Gieddecohkka, but we decided to walk around it. This route took us to pond that was south from Haldijavri (lake that sits next to Halti fell). While we were eating lunch, we decided to leave our packs behind and hike remaining 4 miles to top of Halti without packs slowing us down. It was kind of nice to walk up the fell, when someone else had done all the decision about what it best route to the top of fell.
Halti is interesting fell, because highest point of the fell is actually on Norway, but slightly below it you will find highest point in Finland (1324 meters above sea). Yellow stones in a picture present the highest point in Finland. It is also acts as border between Finland and Norway and if you know what you are looking for, you can find geocache. Numbers in official logbook were around 91900, but we were 2nd group, who has also made log entry into geocache. Once we had done all the log entries, we visited the real peak of Halti to admire Norwegean fjords and mountains.
On our way back to camping site, we decided to use marked trail (called Kalottireitti) instead of following our own footsteps. This forced us to wade a river at the end, but at the end it was fastest route and speed was essence, because it had once again started to rain during our descent from Halti and we were in rush to get tent over our heads.

#12: Its easy to recognize Halti from other fells, because it has different kind of rock in it. This makes Halti appear brown, while most of fells in Lapland are gray.
