Cherry flowers

Cherry flowers in year 2008

During last couple weeks, we’ve handled quite few warm days in southern Finland. As a result from this warm period, nature is one week ahead of the normal schedule. Latest proof about this is currently visible in japanese style garden (Roihuvuori, Helsinki), where cherry trees opened their flowers. This year cherry trees have more flowers than what we’ve seen in last couple years.

I took large number of photographs (relative term, but…) and they looked good, when I viewed them on camera and examined downsized samples on computer screen, but 100% crops show that I had forgot some basic rules about macro photographs. If one wants to take closeup from single cherry flower with 100mm macro lens, you need f/11 or smaller aperture. Otherwise photographer has to make choice on what parts of the flower he wants to get sharp in his picture and which can be out of focus. If you take step back and shoot little bit wider area f/8 is enough to get nice sharp photograph about flower.

Technical details: Canon EOS 40D, EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro, Speedlight 580EX II and ST-E2 (1/250s, f/8, ISO200)
