Greek dolphin

Last week, I didn’t had chance to do whole lot of photography. When Sunday was rainy, I finally decided to do my first real experiment as Strobist. In January 2006, I took photograph about Sanna’s souvenier from Greek. I was never really happy about the photograph, but since I had to had one for photo-a-day project, it had to do.
On Sunday, I finally went and took some blue cloth, semitransparent paper, white envolope (A4 in size), couple tripods, camera, wireless trigger, flash and set to work.

Flash (on tripod) was placed high on camera left shooting its light downwards through the paper, which role was to spread the light in softbox fashion. On camera right, I had white envelope in vertical position to act as reflector . Because tripods were already in use, camera was handheld.
As far as settings are concerned, camera was on manual with 1/160s and f/8 and flash was on TTL mode with +1 1/3 setting.

I might have been able to do better job on controlling shadows, if I would have placed second flash on camera left instead of reflector, but as a first controlled trial on off-camera flash, I wanted to limit my options to just one flash. When I finally get my shoot through umbrella, I might actually repeat this experiment with two flashes to see how big difference that can do.

Technical details: Canon EOS 40D, Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro, Canon ST-E2 and Canon SpeedLight 580EX II (1/160s, f/8, ISO200)
